First!!!

EDIT: Well not quite but I'll take it. Good write up JJ. The more and more that I think about a trade (at least a bigger one), the less likely I think something will actually happen. I don't have sources or an in with management in any way but from observation I don't think Sharp goes. I don't think the return would match what is expected for a caliber player like him. Also, I don't think anyone that is on the cusp of victory (the kind of team that would try to grab a Sharp like player) 1) has enough room to take him on or 2)Isn't willing to give up necessary pieces to acquire him.

Why doesn't anyone have an issue with Crawford's cap hit at 6 million? Is he really a 6 million dollar goaltender?

Because you guys just paid Ryan Miller 6 mil. I have zero problem now with his cap number. He has proven he can handle his spot. A number one goalie for 6 mil won't seem like much in a couple years.

Seems to be the consensus that $6M is what you have to pay your starter these days. We were having that discussion in the Leafs forum regarding Bernier's contract next season.

Crow is more than capable and if not for him the Hawks would have bowed out in Round 1 or Round 2. It's not like we have goal tending depth and the guy is proven. I am less concerned about his contract.

The team is top heavy...too many guys making too much. One or two will have to go. Can't wait to trade Sharp next year and get a tomato can for him.

His cap hit is less of a concern than the answer to the question "Who would have replaced him if the Hawks hadn't signed him to a 6M/yr extension?"

No you didnit vancouver!

You had two solid ones and overpaid both and now "settled" for a 3rd overrated guy and paid too much?

Wrong team board got clicked on....

I think the Habs would be willing to give Eller and a prospect or a pick for Sharp.

Would be a faire trade for both teams imho.

May get a couple of tomato cans. Leddy maybe something more.

Would be dreaming to ask for an exchange of first round choices, and move up significantly to draft the next Sharp. That would be a "sharp" move. Yeah, not happening!

Mornin' JJ and all...

while I think Dineen is a real solid hire - I would have loved to have seen Adam Oates run the Hawks powerplay...

Agreed

I think it came down to choosing Oates to boast the power play now

or

hire dineen to help with development of the younger guys and teaching them the pro game. which will be 10x more valuable for the new kids coming in as opposed to how to move around on the power play

Oate's previous assistant job was in New Jersey. Not exactly a hotbed for offence. What he did have was Kovalchuk to design the PP around. Dineen is clearly the better hire in this case.

A bit too high both in cap hit and term. I feel SB & Co believed they would not be able to get a good replacement via trade, UFA's were too expensive and there's nothing really in the pipeline.

I would have guessed however a $4.8-5.2M cap hit by 4-5 years would have worked though. $6M x 6yrs seems too high.

Not at all, but who would take him, and what would we replace him with? He does come up big, but I still don't have all the confidence in him that I should.

I'd be curious what Kane would bring back, if they needed to clear cap space. I'm not saying they should trade him, but I'm curious what a team would pay for him. He's not the first choice, by any stretch, of who I'd deal.

JJ hit it, dog days of hockey right now. After the fan fest we lose a roster player or two and Hawks FO will leave town for a couple weeks for a well deserved rest.

There is value in a great contract. Zake Smith at $1.9m for 3 years is a golden contract. He is a heart and sole player, nice hands, always takes the body, will fight anyone, great guy in dressing room and loved by his coaches at every level he has played. Always thought the best deal for the Hawks was Smith straight up for Sharp. You can Richarder over a pick or a prospect, all that can be balanced. But, essentially the Hawks get something they need in a player and they get cap relief.

Crazy to take on a player like Eller who is a RFA and already looking for a big salary increase.

Fair enough, just curious as to what people thought of his cap hit, which I think is a bit too high IMO. That said, as mentioned by someone, seems to be the going rate for a starting goaltender these days.
